COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – May 28, 2009 – KRCC, Colorado College’s NPR-affiliated radio station, is presenting nine concerts between June and August, either on its own or in conjunction with the Pikes Peak Library District and Colorado College’s Summer Festival of the Arts. The schedule is below:

June 12: Quetzal
Quetzal's music combines Mexican and Cuban rhythms, jazz and rock behind the powerful vocals of siblings Martha and Gabriel Gonzalez. The group was formed in East Los Angeles by guitarist-composer Quetzal Flores, who wanted the band to not only have a unique sound, but also a social consciousness. They have been hailed by Los Lobos and others as the new torch bearers of Chicano music.

July 14: Old 97's
This show will have two solo opening sets, one by Murry Hammond and the other by Rhett Miller, both of whom are in the 97s, followed by the Old 97’s full band set. July 17: La Fanfare de Belgistan
Hailing from the fictional Belgistan region of Eastern Belgium, La Fanfare du Belgistan creates tantalizing music using a variety of classic and exotic instruments, from trumpets to karbakas. Inspired by Arab and gypsy music, La Fanfare updates diverse traditional forms by incorporating elements of trance, dance, and jazz music.

July 24 and 25: Blues Under the Bridge
A two-day outdoor festival. Day one features music from Kim Wilson and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Janiva Magness, Guy Davis, Lionel Young and Grant Sabin. Day two features music from Bettye LaVette, Duke Robillard, Big Bill Morganfield, Lady Dottie and the Diamonds, Terry Quiett Band, Jeremy Vasquez Band and Brandon Scott Sellner. Bristol Beer will be on tap, there will be a full bar, food vendors and local artisans. One and two day passes available. Tickets on sale Monday June 1 at KRCC, 912 N. August 6: Issa Bagayogo
A master of modern Mali music, Issa Bagayogo overcame drug addiction to become an internationally renowned artist. His tunes are an eclectic blend of traditional acoustic sounds, funk, reggae and electronica. Sponsored by the CC Summer Festival of the Arts, the World Music Series of Pikes Peak Library District and KRCC.

August 7: Orchestra Baobab
In 2001, the Senegalese band returned to recording and performing after a 16-year hiatus, establishing themselves as one of the world’s most enduringly popular live acts and earning unanimous critical acclaim, along with two Radio 3 Awards and a Grammy nomination. Orchestra Baobabs music reflects the realities of Dakar’s rapidly expanding, demographically exploding urban environment. In particular, there is the increased use of the sabar, the hard-cracking drums that provide the signature rhythm of Senegal’s dominant pop sound, mbalax. This concert is sure to be both visually and musically stimulating.

August 12: Johnny Winter
Blues legend Johnny Winter returns to Colorado Springs. Limited $50 VIP tickets includes close-in seating and a party at La’au’s, located behind 830 N. Tejon St. La’au’s party runs 5 to 7 p.m., and includes two tacos and two beers, and music by John-Alex Mason. Opening act for Johnny Winter to be announced. August 29: Ricky Skaggs
KRCC Concerts and the Black Rose Acoustic Society join forces to bring Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder to the Pikes Peak Center for an evening of traditional bluegrass music. Reserved seating. Tickets on sale June 8 at KRCC, 912 N. Weber St.; and at all TicketsWest outlets.
